SBI statement into Tally. Without typing it.

SBI statements are the hardest to read — a line saying TO TRANSFER tells you nothing about who was paid. We dig the payee out of the reference number and suggest a ledger.

What changes for you

What SBI statements put you through

Lines that just say TO TRANSFER with no name

We pull the payee out of the reference number.

Retyping a branch printout because it is a scan

Scanned pages are read the same as digital ones.

Reference numbers spilling over three lines

Spilled lines are joined back to their entry.

Entries landing in the wrong month

We read the date format your statement actually uses.

Sorting interest, SMS charges and reversals every time

Set them once. They are recognised next month.

Columns sliding sideways on later pages

Shifted columns are put back where they belong.

Step by step

How to import an SBI statement into Tally

Works with OnlineSBI downloads and statements from the branch.

1

Download it from SBI

In OnlineSBI, open Account Statement. Pick your account and dates, then download as PDF or Excel. A branch printout you scanned works too.

2

Upload it

Drop the file in. If it is locked, type the password — often your date of birth as ddmmyy, or one you set in OnlineSBI.

3

You check the ledgers

SBI narrations say the least of any bank, so this is where the AI earns its keep. The payee is pulled out of the reference number and matched to your ledgers.

4

Post to Tally

Download the clean Excel, then let Tally Connector — our free Windows app — import it into your open Tally company. Choose your SBI bank ledger and the receipts, payments and contras are created for you. No XML file to build, and Undo Import reverses the whole batch. Or just keep the Excel.

What we do with each SBI column

This is the OnlineSBI layout, used in both its PDF and Excel statements.

SBI column What it becomes
Txn Date Voucher date
Value Date Kept for your reference
Description Narration, and picks the ledger
Ref No./Cheque No. Cheque number, kept exactly as printed
Debit A payment entry
Credit A receipt entry
Balance Used to double-check every row

SBI passbook printouts and older branch formats vary. Run one free statement and you will know in a minute.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I import an SBI statement into Tally?

Download it from OnlineSBI as PDF or Excel, upload it to SmartXtract, check the ledger suggested for each transaction, and post the approved entries into your Tally company.

SBI narrations barely name the payee. Will this actually work?

We look inside the reference number for the payee, not just at the TO TRANSFER text. It also gets better as you use it — a payee you set once is recognised later. On your first SBI statement expect to fix more suggestions than you would with HDFC or ICICI.

Does it work with a scanned statement from the branch?

Yes. Scanned pages are read too, and every row is checked against the balance column so scanning mistakes are caught.

What password do SBI statements use?

It varies. Often your date of birth as ddmmyy, or a password you set in OnlineSBI. Type it at upload and the statement is handled normally.

Can I use the SBI Excel file instead of the PDF?

Yes. XLS, XLSX and CSV all work, and go through the same ledger matching as PDFs.

Does this work for current accounts too?

Yes. Savings and current accounts use the same layout. Current account statements are just longer, and pages count against your plan.
