How to import an Excel bank statement into Tally
Four steps, without touching a single cell.

Pick the Excel option on the convert screen and drop in your XLS, XLSX or CSV.

The real heading row is found under the bank branding. Blank and subtotal rows are dropped. Amounts saved as text become numbers again.
You check the ledgers
Each transaction comes with a suggested ledger. Set one ledger across many similar rows at once, and fix anything that looks wrong.

What we do with each column
We work out each column from what is inside it, so odd headings still work.

Excel statements are counted per file, not per page, because a sheet has no page count.
Common questions
Can Tally import an Excel bank statement directly?
Not in a usable way. Tally wants the data in its own shape, so normally you would rebuild the sheet by hand first. SmartXtract does that part and posts the entries for you.
Which file types can I upload?
XLS, XLSX and CSV. Some banks give you a file named .XLS that is really a CSV inside — we spot that and open it correctly.
Do I need to tidy the sheet first?
No. Bank logos, merged headings, blank rows and subtotal lines are all handled. Upload it exactly as your bank gave it to you.
My sheet has one amount column with Cr and Dr. Does that work?
Yes. Separate debit and credit columns work, and so does a single amount column with a Cr/Dr marker. Banks that use a plus or minus sign instead also work.
Is Excel charged the same as PDF?
PDFs are counted in pages and Excel files are counted per file. Your current allowance for both is shown on the pricing page.
Can I get a clean Excel file back instead?
Yes. Every conversion can be downloaded as a tidy Excel file with the ledger names included.
How does a bank Excel statement actually get into Tally?
Upload the sheet, review the suggested ledgers, then download the reviewed Excel. Tally Connector — our free Windows app, running on the same PC as TallyPrime — imports that file into the company you have open and creates the receipt, payment and contra vouchers. There is no Tally XML file and no TDL to install.
My bank already gives me Excel. Why not use Tally's own bank statement import?
You can, if your bank is on Tally's list and you downloaded the file straight from the bank's portal in the layout Tally expects. Two things break that route in practice: banks that are not on the list, and a sheet that has been opened, edited or rebuilt on the way. Tally's documentation is also explicit that an Excel or CSV converted from a PDF will not be accepted by that import.
